Questions, answered plainly.
Answers to the questions homeowners in Dallas–Fort Worth ask IHS General Contracting about roofing, storm damage, insurance claims, remodeling and general contracting.

General contracting
What kinds of jobs does a general contractor handle?
Gutters, window screens, fence installation and staining, drywall, painting, concrete work such as driveway extensions, garage doors, decks and redecks, chimney chases and tree-damage reconstruction. If it is on the outside or inside of your home, ask.
Can you stain or replace my fence?
Yes. We install board-on-board cedar fences and stain new or existing fences to protect the wood from the Texas sun.
Do you do small jobs?
Yes. Many of our general-contracting jobs are a day or two of work. Send photos and we will tell you quickly whether it is something we take on.
Remodeling
How long does a bathroom remodel take?
A shower or bathroom remodel at IHS typically takes a few days to two weeks, depending on how much comes out and whether plumbing is moved. Our Carrollton bathroom shower remodel was completed in two days.
Can IHS add a room or convert a bonus room?
Yes. We have framed, finished and trimmed bonus rooms and sunrooms across DFW, including a bonus room creation in Preston Hollow and a sunroom remodel in Carrollton.
Will I need to move out during a remodel?
Rarely. For most bathroom, floor and room projects we seal off the work area and keep the rest of the house usable. We will tell you up front if a stage is noisy or dusty enough that you may want to be out.
Do you handle permits?
Yes. Where a permit is required IHS pulls it and schedules the inspections as part of the project.
Roofing
How much does a new roof cost in Dallas–Fort Worth?
It depends on the size and pitch of the roof, the material, and how many layers need to come off. A typical single-family roof replacement in DFW runs from the high four figures to the mid five figures for architectural shingles, with metal and stone-coated steel above that. IHS prices every roof in writing after an on-site inspection, and financing is available.
Should I repair or replace my roof?
Repair when the damage is isolated and the roof is less than about fifteen years old. Replace when leaks keep coming back, shingles are curling or losing granules across whole slopes, or storm damage is widespread enough for insurance to cover a new roof. An inspection tells you which one you are looking at.
What should I do if my roof is leaking right now?
Move belongings out from under the drip, catch the water, and if it is safe, poke a small hole in a bulging ceiling to let it drain. Then call IHS. We will stop the leak first and talk about repair or replacement after.
How long does a roof replacement take?
Most homes in Dallas–Fort Worth are finished in one to two days, weather permitting. Larger or steeper roofs, or roofs with decking that needs replacing, can take a little longer.
What roofing materials does IHS install?
Architectural asphalt shingles, impact-resistant shingles, standing-seam metal and stone-coated steel. We install and repair all types of roofing materials and will tell you which one makes sense for your home and budget.
How do I prepare my roof for spring storm season?
Inspect for winter damage, clean the gutters, trim back branches, check the flashing and attic ventilation, and schedule a professional inspection before the first hail of the season. Our blog has a full eight-step guide.
Storm damage and insurance
Does homeowners insurance cover hail damage to my roof?
In most cases, yes. Standard Texas homeowners policies cover sudden damage from hail and wind. You file the claim, an adjuster inspects the roof, and the insurer pays the approved amount minus your deductible. IHS documents the damage, meets the adjuster on site and submits any supplement so nothing is missed.
What should I do about roof hail damage?
Take photos of any hail on the ground and damage you can see from the ground, do not climb on the roof, and call IHS for an inspection. We check shingles, vents, gutters and flashing, document everything, and help you decide whether to file a claim.
How quickly can IHS come out after a storm?
Usually within a day or two across Dallas–Fort Worth. If you have active leaking, call us and we will tarp the roof to stop further damage while the claim is handled.
Do you work with my insurance adjuster?
Yes. We meet the adjuster at your home, walk the roof together and make sure the scope covers every damaged component, including items that are easy to miss such as drip edge, vents and gutters.
How do roof insurance claims work?
You report the damage to your insurer, an adjuster inspects, and the insurer issues a scope and a first payment. Once the roof is replaced, the insurer releases the recoverable depreciation. IHS handles the paperwork between those steps so the only thing you pay is your deductible.
Working with IHS
Do you offer financing?
Yes. We work hand in hand with industry-leading lenders and can include home improvement projects in your loan, so a roof and a remodel can be financed together at the best rate possible.
Which areas does IHS General Contracting serve?
